BadNewsFromIsraelThisisastudyofTVnewcoverageoftheIsraeli-Palestinianconflictandofhowthiscoveragerelatestotheunderstanding,beliefsandattitudesofthetelevisionaudience.Ourintentionwastodiscussthepressuresandstructureswithinwhichtheyworktoshowtheeffectsofthoseonnewcontentandtoexaminetheroleofthemediaintheconstructionofpublicknowledge.ThestudysuggeststhattelevisionnewsontheIsrael/PalestinianconflictconfusesviewersandsubstantiallyfeaturesIsraeligovernmentviews.IsraelisarequotedandspeakininterviewsovertwiceasmuchasPalestiniansandtherearemajordifferencesinthelanguageusedtodescribethetwosides.ThisoperatesinfavouroftheIsraelisandinfluenceshowviewersunderstandtheconflict.ThestudyfocusedonBBCOneandITVNewsfromthestartofthecurrentPalestinianintifada,theGlasgowresearchersexaminedaround200newsprogrammesandinterviewedandquestionedover800people.SomeMajorFindings:Thereisapreponderanceofofficial‘Israeliperspectives’,particularlyonBBC1,whereIsraeliswereinterviewedorreportedovertwiceasmuchasPalestinians.Ontopofthis,USpoliticianswhosupportIsraelwereverystronglyfeatured.TheyappearedmorethanpoliticiansfromanyothercountryandtwiceasmuchasthosefromBritain.TVnewssaysalmostnothingaboutthehistoryororiginsoftheconflict.Thegreatmajorityofviewersdependedonthisnewsastheirmainsourceofinformation.Thegapsintheirknowledgecloselyparalleledthe‘gaps’inthenews.MostdidnotknowthatthePalestinianshadbeenforcedfromtheirhomesandlandwhenIsraelwasestablishedin1948.In1967IsraeloccupiedbyforcetheterritoriestowhichthePalestinianrefugeeshadmoved.MostviewersdidnotknowthatthePalestinianssubsequentlylivedunderIsraelimilitaryruleorthattheIsraelistookcontrolofkeyresourcessuchaswater,andthedamagethisdidtothePalestinianeconomy.Withoutexplanationsbeinggivenonthenews,therewasgreatconfusionamongstviewersevenaboutwhowas‘occupying’theoccupiedterritories.Someunderstood‘occupied’tomeanthatsomeonewasontheland(asinabathroombeingoccupied)sotheythoughtthatthePalestiniansweretheoccupiers.Manysawtheconflictasasortofborderdisputebetwe
