ChinaIndustryMonitorSteelVol.501January2005Economy&SectorHighlightsInsidethisIssue•Economy&SectorHighlights¾ForeignDirectInvestment(FDI)grew22percentinrealtermsinthefirst11monthsof2004.ActualFDIstoodat•NewsItemsUS$57.553billion.Chinaapprovedatotalof39,291newoverseas-investedcompanies,up7.31percentinthesame•RecentIndustryPerformanceperiodlastyear.FDIforthemonthofNovemberstoodatUS$3.75billion,up7percentonayearearlier.•InternationalTrade•Mergers&Acquisitions¾AccordingtoMinistryofCommerceandgeneraladministrationofcustoms,China'stotalvalueofimportsand•RegulatoryIssuesexportsreachedUS$1,038.38billion,up36.5percentfor11monthsendingNovember,2004fromthesameperiodlast•CompanyScan:ChinaSteelCorporationyear.ThisisthefirsttimethatforeigntradevolumehassurpassedUS$1,000billion.•IndustryOutlook¾China'sIndustrialoutputgrowtheasedto14.8percentinNovember,itsslowestpacein18monthsasgovernmentmeasurestocurbtheeconomyshowsignsoftakingeffect.AccordingtotheNationalBureauofStatistics(NBS),productionslowedfrom15.7percentinOctoberand17.9percentforthesamemonthlastyear.Outputforthefirst11monthsof2004grew16.8percent,unchangedfromthesameperiodin2003.¾China'sinflationrateroseatitsslowestpaceinninemonthsinNovember,keptincheckbylowerpricerisesforfoodandeasingthepressureforfurtherinterestratehikes.AccordingtoTheNationalBureauofStatistics,theNovemberConsumerPriceIndex(CPI)wasup2.8percentyear-on-year,comparedwith4.3percentinOctoberand3.0percentinNovember2003.UrbanconsumerpricesinNovemberrose2.4percentyear-on-year,whileruralCPIwasup3.6percent.¾Forthefirstelevenmonthsofthisyear,Chinahadproduced245milliontonsofcrudesteelup22percentfromthesameperiodoflastyear.¾InthemonthofNovember,China’scrudesteelproductioncontinuedanupwardtrendsetinthepastmonth,withtotalproductionof25.035milliontons,up21.2percentfromthesameperiodoflastyear.¾InthemonthofNovember,Chinaimported1.79milliontonesandexported1.92milliontonesofsteelandduringJan-Nov2004Chinaimported27.32milliontonesandexport
